Whew, it’s back to school time! School has been in session for two weeks now here in Houston, so you’d think that I’d be used to our routine, right? I can assure you, even though I’m not the one who is in school, I am still looking forward to the long Labor Day weekend just as much as the kids are! If you are heading back to school you might be feeling a mixture of excitement for a new year of learning, fresh experiences and of course new deadlines that have yet to be tackled. It’s always a whirlwind in the beginning, yet there is just something about getting back on a regular routine that feels so refreshing.
Today I sat at my desk, pulled out my composition notebook, glitter tape, gold scissors and pink paperclips and went back-to-school Too Faced style with some of their late-summer releases. The Too Faced Totally Cute palette is well, totally cute in pink and it even comes with stickers to decorate it. I’m totally re-living fourth grade over here and I’m not complaining about it. Along with the palette release, Too Faced has introduced their Sketch Marker Liquid Art Liner in a rainbow of colors (even yellow!) and they are packaged up with cute details like hearts and fun little notes stamped on each liner – almost like when your bestie wrote you a note and passed it to you in school without the teacher looking.
Today let’s take a closer look at these two releases, swatches and my thoughts on performance.
Too Faced Totally Cute Palette
Too Faced Totally Cute Palette
The Totally Cute palette is packaged in the traditional Too Faced tin packaging with a mirror on the inside. Included with this release are two sheets of stickers so you can customize your palette inside and out. Of course to really re-live my fourth grade year I would need some puffy stickers – what can we do about that Too Faced?
Inside of the palette there are nine shadows. Three lighter shades on the left which are in larger pans and six on the right. The palette includes three matte shades (horizontal in the top row) and six shimmer.
- Double Scoop is a cool-toned nude shade that is matte. It is even fair for my skintone so it is good to brighten the lid all over or use as a brow highlight.
- Bunny Fu-Fu is a warm rusty brown in a matte finish. I thought it reminded me of Peanut Butter from the Peanut Butter and Jelly palette but this shade is lighter and more orange.
- Chocolate Donut is a matte plummy brown. This is a very pigmented shade when packed on the lid or used on the lower lashline and when blended out it takes on more of a taupe-plum shade that I think would work well for cooler skintones.
- Shooting Star is a shimmer shadow that looks darker in the pan, but goes on the lid as a light neutral nude.
- Clover is a bright green with yellow shift in a shimmer finish. The shade has lots of shimmer but it is smooth to apply with no fallout.
- Storm Cloud is a plum/turquoise duochrome and is one of my favorites! So fun for a night out!
- Unicorn is a white shimmer with light pink shift. I like to use this as a brow highlight for a fun pop!
- I <3 TF is a shimmery pink with flecks of silver sparkle. The pink isn’t as bold as it appears in these photos, and it can be easily blended out so it isn’t so “in your face” pink.
- Meow! is a satin finish deep purple brown perfect for deepening up the outer corner or using at the lashline.
Swatches L to R: Double Scoop, Bunny Fu-Fu, Chocolate Donut, Shooting Star, Clover, Storm Cloud, Unicorn, I<3TF, Meow!
The performance of the shadows is on-par with Too Faced quality. I was pleasantly surprised not to experience a lot of fallout with shades like Storm Cloud or Meow! which was great. What I found in working with the palette was that the color combinations are a little different than what I’m used to. Similar to another summer release like the Sugar Pop! eye palette, I think these type of fun palettes are good additions to other more neutral palettes from the brand such as the Natural Matte or Natural Eyes collections, and especially the Peanut Butter & Jelly palette to really round out an eye look. Too Faced does have an eye makeup look guide included with the palette which shares a couple of color combinations that aren’t run-of-the-mill combos, which is a good thing if you want to get a unique look. I found myself using the PB&J palette alongside this one to fill in gaps for even an every day eye look and I didn’t reach for the pink or green in the palette much, but that is just my personal style. Overall the quality is there, the colors are unique, but for me this isn’t an all-inclusive palette so I must use it in conjunction with other palettes.
Now let’s decorate the palette! First let’s have fun with the outside:
Above I have placed stickers to make my palette unique to me. Unicorns and ice cream? Yes please!
I couldn’t stop with the outside and so I added a few more stickers around the mirror as well.
Too Faced Sketch Marker Liquid Art Liner
Pass a note…but don’t get caught!
Don’t you just love shiny new markers on the first day of school? My new marker desire has been met with another new release from Too Faced – the Sketch Marker Art Liner eye liner pens. Offered in a rainbow of 12 colors (including a black and a white) these waterproof felt tip pens take inspiration from Japanese calligraphy pens.
The packaging has cute little details – hearts on the pen caps as well as sweet messages in gold written on the outside. I also like how solidly they “click” together when I put the cap back on so that I know it is sealed and won’t dry out. Inside the pen there is a little “shaker ball” to shake up the liner a bit to keep the tip fresh. In application I found all three performed similarly and have excellent pigmentation. However, the product itself seems to perform differently depending on what product I applied on my lids first. With matte eyeshadow it seemed to tug a bit, with shimmery shadow it was smoother and with just eye primer it applied the smoothest.
It’s all in the cutesy details!
Both the “ink flow” from the pen was excellent and the pigmentation of the product was excellent but the formula sets up quickly. This is great if you are fast at applying your eyeliner, but not so great if you are slow as molasses like me! I often go back to fix any mistakes or smooth things out but I find the tip tugs along the part where I had already applied it, making it hard to get a precise line along my lids. Additionally, my eyelids aren’t getting any younger so I felt like I needed to be extra careful to smooth the lid so it won’t catch on any wrinkles. Keeping the liner right up along the lashline worked well for me, but when it came to the wing I felt it was a one-shot kinda deal because of the fast setting formula. Overall it is a nicely pigmented liner that stays put once on the eyes but it isn’t the easiest liner I’ve ever worked with.
Swatched L to R: Smokey Emerald, Deep Navy, Deep Espresso
Three things I definitely love about the Sketch Markers is that #1 they are waterproof, #2 they are beautifully pigmented, and #3 the finish is matte, which I love in a liner!
Too Faced Totally Cute + Sketch Marker Makeup Look
Using both the Totally Cute palette and one of the Sketch Makers I decided to create a fun Friday night makeup look. Originally I was going to put together a school or work appropriate look using these products but when I was faced with all the color options I knew I had to do something fun, so fun it was!
On the eyes: Too Faced Totally Cute Palette: Storm Cloud on the lid, Chocolate Donut and Bunny Fu-Fu on the inner and outer corners and blended into the crease. Unicorn as a brow highlight. Chocolate Donut and Bunny Fu-Fu smudged on the lower lashline. Deep Espresso Sketch Marker on the upper lashline. On the lips: Too Faced La Créme in Nude Beach
This was a fun Friday night look! I like the duochrome of Storm Cloud underneath the Deep Espresso Sketch Marker liner.
What do you think of these new Too Faced releases? Will you be giving them a try? Let me know your favorites and if you have this palette what looks you like to create with it so I can try it too.
Oh, and whether you’ve already started back to school where you live or you are gearing up for it to start in a couple of days I wish you a wonderful and successful new school year. Let me know what you are looking forward to most!
