For me it’s YES to all the matte lips when autumn is coming my way, but usually my matte obsession ends as soon as my lips figure out what’s going on and decides to protest.  I don’t have particularly dry lips year-round, but they certainly do like to be moisturized and not feel like they’re having the life sucked out of them by most matte lipsticks.

Ever since Fall collections have begun popping up this year I’m seeing the phrase “modern matte”, which is something I was a bit confused about until I actually experienced this version from Sephora.  Although it isn’t in a twist-up tube, and is delivered more like a liquid lipstick, these Luster Matte Long Wear Lip Color are delivering the soft matte lip I want, but actually (yes actually) does not dry my lips out.  It’s a miracle!  Let’s take a look at 2 of the 15 available shades in this line.

Matte Lips

Sephora says their Luster Matte Long Wear Lip Color is “An ultralightweight, modern matte lip color with a subtle sheen.”

The flocked applicator has a rounded tip but is flat for a more precise application.

L to R: Rose Luster, Orchid Luster

Rose Luster is a muted red shade that goes on bolder than in the tube and seems to be a fairly neutral shade of red.

Orchid Luster is a vibrant pink with hints of purple.  Although it isn’t a shade I normally walk out of the house wearing, I’m loving pairing it with a cool smokey silver eye.  It is such a fun shade!

The Luster Mattes give a solid swipe of color when applied to the lips.  The applicator makes it easy to get a defined line around the outside of the lips, which I was very impressed with.  Although some long wearing lip color tends to dry out and leave the lips with a “cracked” feeling, the formula of these babies is ultra smooth and lightweight.  The feeling and finish can be compared a bit to the Rimmel London Show-Off Lip Velvet, which also has a matte finish, however these Sephora Luster Mattes do not have much of a scent and they are actually more moisturizing.

After a few minutes the product does settle into the lips, but doesn’t really set, so although they last a long time (4+ hours for me even through eating) they can smudge a bit if you wipe your lips.

Overall I’m very impressed with this lightweight, moisturizing and long-wearing matte lip option from Sephora.
