ALONG WITH the new release of their Stay Matte Liquid Mousse Foundation (review coming up soon!) Rimmel has introduced the new Stay Matte Primer, which I’m already so head-over-heels for I had to sneak it in first!  This is the first budget-buy primer at the drugstore that performs well and does what it says on my skin – stays matte!

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer

The product is dispensed in a squeeze tube.

Swatched – The primer is white, shown at left, a heavy swatch, and on the right swatched out.  Once blended into the skin it is undetectable.

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer is a long-lasting, budget-friendly primer that is quite impressive.  I love the smooth texture – going on much like a lotion, but after being blended into the skin it immediately dries and gives the complexion a matte – but not powdery look.  Rimmel says Stay Matte Primer will minimize the appearance of pores, but I find it does not fill them in, so they are still visible.

Rimmel claims this product will control shine for up to 8 hours  I tested this product out both on top of and underneath a foundation.  First, I applied Stay Matte Primer underneath a matte foundation that does not stay matte on my skin when worn alone, and ten hours later I was only getting minimal (acceptable) shine-through peeking in.

When applied on top of foundation it gives the skin an immediate matte look (again, not powdery) so it takes away some luminosity from the foundation.  This time I tried it both on top of and underneath YSL Touche Le Teint Touche Éclat, which is quite luminous on its own. When wearing it on top I saw no shine peeking through after 4 hours, and when worn under the foundation I saw slight shine peeking through after four hours.  Overall I was very pleased in both situations.

  1. Thank you for the review. 🙂 I purchased the foundation (and love it), but was hesitant to buy the primer. I will for sure be picking this up now. I look forward to reading your post on the foundation.

Hi April! I was also hesitant at first as well but ultimately decided to jump on in! 😉 I’m glad I did – you will be pleased to know they pair beautifully! 🙂

You will love it! 🙂 I think it pairs well with the foundation, although I feel like it accentuates my pores – but the two together are a fabulous team that if I use some pore filler I’m good to go! Definitely consider the foundation too – just in case it works for you – the finish is beautiful!

  2. Does the foundation gloop up when applied over this primer? I have a lot of trouble with my foundation sort of dragging and glooping up over primers.

Hi Jasmine! I did not find it to do that. I was rather impressed at how well it smoothed over the skin and melded with it. It worked beautifully with both of the foundations I mentioned in this post. Another one of my faves is Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer – at the other end of the spectrum as far as price goes – but it is a beauty to work with indeed! 🙂

  3. i have this primer and it does not keep me matte for 8 hours. i work in an office and i dont even sweat in the office its air conditioned and i put this on around 7am and by 12pm i am not matte any more. and the only reason i am matte in the first place is because of my mineral foundation i apply after my regular foundation. do i need to not only use a matte primer but matte foundation as well? the reason i bought this primer was to void that problem of buying all matte things

  4. I usually don’t do review.. Yet this primer work really good, at least for me. In the summer my face become really shiny and I decide to give this a try and it worked very well. I guess depending on the skin type you may get a different response, but for me I didn’t see ANY shine for a good six hrs. Then a little shine peek though. So I did a clean brush touch up, but the best thing about this primer you can put it on top of your already apply make up if you need it at that sixth hour…ya!!! I lightly sooth in a little bit in the needed areas and that does the trick to to extend your look. Good product!

I agree – this is definitely a great mattifying primer! It is the best one at the drugstore by far I’ve found. So happy it works for you too – and I love using it on top of my foundation as well – simply perfection! 🙂

  5. hello, will it make a regular foundation, which is not matte make it less dewy looking?

Hello Ira! In my experience it only controls the oiliness from my skin, but when I use a regular foundation it still keeps the foundation looking the same so if the foundation is dewy it remains dewy and if the foundation has a regular or satin finish then it also stays the same. If you are looking for something that will take away the dewiness from the foundation after you’ve applied, I also recommend the Rimmel Stay Matte Powder which is available in translucent (it is a pressed powder) that works quite well! 🙂 I hope that helps!
