Maybelline goes Leather with their latest Color Tattoo collection released not too long ago. I am a huge fan of the Maybelline Color Tattoos and find they are an easy way to swipe color on the lids in a flash when I’m heading out the door so naturally I was very curious about these new additions!
The new Color Tattoo Leather collection includes five shades (4 matte, one slight shimmer) which I’ve got to admit I’m finding slightly different and unique to what I’m used to seeing from the Color Tattoo formula. Let’s look at some more photos & swatches!
The Color Tattoo Leather Collection includes: Creamy Beige, Deep Forest, Vintage Plum, Chocolate Suede, Dramatic Black

Swatched L to R: Creamy Beige, Deep Forest, Vintage Plum, Chocolate Suede, Dramatic Black
Now I am typically a die-hard Maybelline Color Tattoos fan. Heck, I’ve even been known to do entire eye tutorials featuring the Color Tattoos (see here and here) so it was my full intention to do an “all Color Tattoos” eye look again for you here out of tradition but I have to say I’m feeling a tad differently about the Color Tattoo Leather formula. I’ve been using them for a couple of weeks now and what I like to use them for best is an eye shadow base rather than using them instead of eye shadow color on the lids as I have previously done with the Color Tattoos.
Four from the Leather collection have a matte finish, or I guess a “leather” finish if you’d like to get technical. The formula is not as easy to blend on the lid as those that have shimmer, so the one Color Tattoo in this collection, Chocolate Suede actually performs the best out of all five because it does have a bit of shimmer to it. My least favorite in performing are Vintage Plum and Deep Forest which I find hard to layer on the lids, and when I finally get it blended to my satisfaction I find one part of the lid grabs the color too much and leaves a dark patchy look on the lids. I have tried applying these on my bare lids as well as applying over an eye shadow primer and they still perform the same for me.
The pigmentation is solid with Chocolate Suede, next Dramatic Black does perform pretty solidly as well. Creamy Beige can be layered more easily than the others in the collection, so if it would make a good lid color for you then this one is an excellent choice. Vintage Plum and Deep Forest pigmentation is a little on the weak side in my opinion and because of the way they perform they aren’t easily built up on the lids or smoothed.
As far as longevity, the Color Tattoo Leather perform identically on my oily lids as the regular Color Tattoos. They don’t budge once they set on the lids, however, after 8 hours of wear I get creasing, so using a primer underneath is a necessity for me.
Overall, I like the matte finish of these Color Tattoos, but just wish they all performed equally. As it stands, I would definitely recommend Chocolate Suede, secondly Creamy Beige and if you want a soft matte black Dramatic Black will be a good choice (which I also find handy to double as a soft black liner!) Although they are pretty shades I do not recommend Deep Forest or Vintage Plum at least from my experience with them.
