When you think nude what comes to mind? I suppose if this wasn’t a beauty blog you might immediately think of that strategically placed heirloom nude painting your father insisted reside in the dining room, or maybe even celebrity headlines announcing “nude photos leaked”, but perhaps I’m getting little too creative with the term, so likely you might just think of your Birthday Suit which of course is nude in its organic form.
However, being beauty/fashion minded as you are, you know that nude is a way to describe
4 of the 7 ways to find your perfect nude lip from Marc Jacobs Beauty.
anything flesh-toned, natural or neutral in color palette. This color is quite a chameleon, my friend. Nude is a state of mind these days. No longer do we consider pale and pasty lips the only way to “get nude” and the new spring release from Marc Jacobs Beauty reveals this to perfection.
The New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel, $30 US is the latest lip innovation from Marc Jacobs Beauty. If you checked out my review of their other spring lip release recently, the Le Marc Lip Créme and those were a little bold for your taste (because dang girl they aren’t color shy!) then this collection may just be what you are looking for.
With a light vanilla scent, and nourishing Monoi Butter, the New Nudes Sheer Lip Gel is available in seven shades in a variety of “nudes”. The formula is sheer just as they are described, but depending on how pigmented your lips are you may still be surprised at how much color you can get out of them. The consistency does feel gel-like, also as they are described, and the finish is glossy. They actually remind me of the Chanel Rouge Coco Shine in the finish, but the formula is not as slick as a Coco Shine. Now in terms of longevity, these are probably the polar opposite to their sleek sisters the Le Marc Lip Créme because not only are they sheer, they don’t last very long on the lips. I definitely love that about these though – not only can I choose my favorite “nude” as I wear it, it fades nudily (or maybe I mean naturally), so that depending on which shade I choose it lasts anywhere between 1 1/2 -3 hours on my lips, disappears while eating, fades softly while sipping and the glisten/shine begins to meld with my lips after about one hour which defines nude to a “T”.
Now enough nude-y talk, let’s get to the swatches!
Swatched L to R: Strange Magic, Have We Met?, Understudy, Eat Cake (see I told you cake was involved!)
Strange Magic is described as a ” warm nude pink”. This shade is definitely a pale pink that I didn’t love at first application because it accentuates any dryness in your lips. I gave it a second go though and exfoliated my lips with a washcloth, applied a lip balm and allowed it to soak in and the next time I applied it was magic indeed. I am in love with this shade on her own but especially topped on any one of the new MJB (P)outliner Longwear Lip Pencils which I will be sharing next and the feature will also star Strange Magic as a topper to each one – it is heavenly. This pale shade may not be for everyone but I definitely recommend giving it a try because she is my favorite of the bunch!
Have We Met? is described as a “shimmering warm pink”. This is my second favorite of the four because it is such a natural pink with glorious sheen and it is so easy to apply and go, re-apply and go again. I love the sheer quality about it which frees me to not worry about anything settling into my lip lines or traveling to the corners of my mouth. She is simply fabulous!
Understudy is described as a “terracotta pink” which I actually did not read until just now, but I had thought I saw some rusty tones in this one so now it all makes sense! This shade is more richly pigmented than the previous two with incredible sheen and again is so easy to wear. I would say if you are shy about a bold coral then try this rusty pink shade because it gives the essence of a coral without the high maintenance. This is a perfect spring-to-summer shade indeed!
Eat Cake is described as a “rosy nude” and although it appears quite similar in richness to Understudy the tones are definitely more rosy and less of a warm terracotta. This shade is also quite pigmented for being sheer, but again easy to wear and I can see this as a perfect rosey nude for darker skintones.
Overall I am a big fan of these new sheer lip gels from MJB. They are easy to wear, and they feel nice on the lips. Keep in mind the paler the shade you choose compared to your natural lip color means you might have to take care in moisturizing beforehand, but because they feel comfortable on the lips throughout the wear you won’t have to worry about it the rest of the night when reapplying. These lip gels will be going on rotation from spring through summer for me!
