6 Shocking Words My 9 Year Old Said About My Hair (and the 5 Things I’m Going to Do About It)

In Hair by Angie Canning

Um excuse me…what did you just say?!

While tucking my 9 year old son into bed the other night I leaned down to give him a kiss and my hair brushed against his cheek.  Expecting a “Goodnight Mom”, instead he said:

“Mom, your hair feels like plastic.”

As every blonde in the room gasped (okay it was just me) those words couldn’t have hit me harder.  Oh the stab right to my little highlighted heart.  Kids are notorious for speaking what’s on their minds.  And while not everything is excusable I’m letting this one slide because girl, he’s right.

*sigh*

I’ve been on auto pilot with my hair as of late.  Giving it a break from highlighting for awhile and letting my roots grow out a bit I thought I would save a little dough and save my hair a little in the process but somewhere in the midst of that I’ve slipped into the habit of wash, rinse and repeat without stopping to add in other hair potions that make my hair feel and perform “like real hair”.  And wow, I can tell.

So what is a girl with plastic-y blonde hair to do?  Before I give up hope and turn to the brunette side, I’ve got 5 hair products for damaged hair I’m giving a try that I’m hoping will help restore that real hair kinda feeling to these Goldilock wannabe tresses.

organix-renewing moroccoan-argan-oil

{Oldie} but a goody

I’ve had the Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Extra Penetrating Oil $6.99 US in my hair arsenal since trying it out last year and after pulling it out again and seeing it is designed for “dry coarse hair” I immediately put this back on rotation.  After towel-drying my hair I’ve been adding a small amount to the ends of my hair to get some smoothness and hydration back.  Let’s just say my hair.  She’s thirsty.

drybar-Hot-Toddy-and-Mudslide

A {tall } drink at the drybar

Some press samples just might be sent directly down from heaven, which looks like the case with two products from drybar I’m going to take to town on these tresses.  The drybar Mudslide Nourishing Hair Mask  $30 US (8.5 oz. size, smaller size shown.) will be my first order of business.  This “intensive yet lightweight hair mask helps revive hair in a single treatment.” which sounds like a tall glass of water my hair wants to guzzle right up!  Next, because I still want to be styling my hair during the process, drybar Hot Toddy Heat & UV Protectant  $16 US is something my hair looks forward to testing out.  The lightweight and lotion-like formula seems like it will be perfect for my fine hair.  A bonus is that both products smell amazing – we’ve already taken a whiff!

Alterna-Haircare-Instant-Recovery

{when} samples are golden

Pay attention to your Sephora emails because this free offer couldn’t have come at a better time!  Offered a few weeks ago free with $25 purchase + a special code I picked up the Alterna Caviar Repair RX 5-Day Sample set.  Let’s be honest, with celebrity Katie Holmes shiny locks to advertise the brand you know I couldn’t resist this one.  I’ve only given one Alterna Caviar product a try, so I’m excited to give this one a try next!

Living-Proof-Targeted-Repair-Cream

tried {and} true

In my hair rehabilitation journey I’ve got to give props (and repurchase) one of my tried and true favorites, Living Proof Restore Targeted Repair Cream, which appears to have been re-named – Restore Instant Repair Lotion $35 US has been one of my Living Proof favorites for quite some time now.  I used it up a few months ago and have since been using a different leave-in conditioner that just isn’t dicing it up like it should so yeah, I’m biting the bullet and putting this one in my Sephora cart as soon as we hang up here!
