Maybelline Color Whisper Lipstick | Photos, Review, Swatches

Maybelline Color Whisper Packaging

Maybelline’s Color Whisper Lipsticks have launched, and I was so excited to try this new sheer balm-like lip product that has been said to compare to Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter and L’Oreal Colour Riche Lip Balm.  With 20 soft shades to decide upon, mostly ranging from pinks, neutrals and a few brights, there is a good chance you will find at least one that catches your eye!

L to R: Mocha Muse, Lust for Blush, Pin Up Peach, One Size Fits Pearl

L to R: Mocha Muse, Lust for Blush, Pin Up Peach, One Size Fits Pearl

Mocha Muse is a neutral-toned nude-like shade

Lust for Blush is a cool pink shade

Pin Up Peach is a warm coral peach shade

One Size Fits Pearl is a soft pink shade that is nearly sheer.

Maybelline says their Color Whisper lipsticks are “Pure color pigments suspended in a weightless gel.  No heavy waxes or oils.  Soft, sexy gel-color.”

Application & Experience.
Glancing at all 20 shades in this collection will show quite a variety of color which I found impressive.  I would say in general the shades I purchased, while they may swatch “sheer” on the arm, they do appear with more color on the lip and I would definitely have to agree with Maybelline’s “weightless gel” description of them.  I found them to be as smooth on the lips as L’Oreal Colour Riche Balms, but with more moisturizing properties (at least for my lips) which I do like.  They are easy to apply and reapply, and each shade I purchased is consistently smooth and feel the same on the lips.  I get about 1.5 – 2 hours of wear if I am just talking or drinking, but after eating anything reapplication is necessary.  These are not meant to be intensely pigmented or long-wearing, so this wear time was to be expected.

Overall I am loving these easy to wear washes of gel-color for the lips!  The shade range is fantastic, but more importantly how they feel on my lips is great.  I daresay they please me more than my favorite L’Oreal Colour Riche Balm, and I definitely prefer these new Color Whispers to Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters.  For being a soft gel-color for the lips I think they are fantastic!

    1. Ooooh very curious now! How do you think these compare to the Colour Caresses, Angie?? Because I like that formula a lot but haven’t tried the Colour Riche Balms.

Hi Becca! I would have to say since these have moisturizing properties on my lips they tend to at the end of their “life” on my lips feel more like a balm and less slippery than the Colour Caresse lipsticks. Also, they are less pigmented than the Colour Caresse.
I think the difference between the Colour Riche Balms and these is mainly the pigmentation and the feel on the lips – the Colour Riche Balms tend to not sink into my lips and are smooth just like the Colour Caresse. The Color Whispers are smooth at first just as Colour Riche Balms but then tend to sink in a bit. I hope that didn’t confuse the balm out of you right there, lol! Let me know if I can sheer it (I mean clear it up) for you! ;)

    2. Can’t wait to pick up a couple tomorrow! I’ve been waiting for your review! ;)

      • Angie says:

Oh I hope you like them like I do! :) I would get a few brighter shades if I had a second chance, lol! Maybe the deep plum shade! I can’t wait to hear what you think too. :)

    3. thanks for the review and the swatches – I finally picked up some shades, so far I love them, the product feels much softer and natural on the lips than the thicker Revlon Lip Butters – they really are a whisper haha

I totally agree! I was on the Lip Butter train for so long, then in the fall I tried the L’Oreal Balm and liked the feeling of that better than the Lip Butters (although I only own one of the Balms) and then when these came out I think they are better yet (because they actually feel a little moisturizing vs just sitting on my lips like the Balms do). I would say the Lip Butters are nice, but these definitely feel better. Totally a whisper just as you said, lol! ;)

what colors would you recommend for people with pigmented lips?

ahh they look so nice >_<

      • Angie says:

I think any of the darker or brighter ones would tend to show up better on pigmented lips – I saw a plum one that I think would be gorgeous! :)  I think of the ones I reviewed here, Pin Up Peach would be a good one, as well as Mocha Muse.  I hope you were able to find some that worked for you – my apologies for missing your comment and replying so late.  I hope all is well for you! :)

The nude shade looks absolutely gorgeous on you. :)

I finally picked a few of these up today, and I was pleasantly surprised!  (Hadn’t seen your review yet and was not sure what to expect pigmentation-wise!)  I grabbed Lust For Blush, Pinup Peach and Berry Ready. They remind me a little of the Clinique Almost Lipsticks in the way the color can almost look scary in the tube but can be applied as sheerly or as fully as you’d like. And WOW do they feel awesome on the lips!  I’ll get a lot of wear out of these.

      • Angie says:

Oh I am so glad you like them too! They do make my lips feel amazing as well, which really surprised me! Pinup Peach is my favorite for sure. :)

I’m usually hesitant to wear peaches and corals without a tan, as I have a cool-toned complexion, but I do really like Pinup Peach!
