Formula X for SEPHORA Lacquer Review

Formula X for SEPHORA

SEPHORA recently introduced Formula X, a new line of nail lacquers in over 200 bold shades with a variety of colors, effects and finishes.  Today I’m sharing with you photos, swatches and review of four of the nail lacquers from The New Classics, The Chromes, The Transformers, and The New Neutrals collections from Formula X.

• JUJU •

Juju from The Holograms

JUJU from The Holograms is a stunning holographic icy blue shade that I fell in love with at first stroke!  While the holographic glint is hidden when you just look at it in the bottle – (I know you are thinking to yourself – *yawn* another metallic baby blue polish…) you must definitely take a second look at this one!  My favorite part about Juju is the unique actual holographic sheen it has that is fully visible on the nails while wearing it.  it is like looking through a frosty window at the sunshine and getting a glimpse of a “rainbow”!  The application and formula was perfect, and because it has a metallic finish, brush strokes are more visible, but two coats evens it out very well.

Juju is described as a ‘holographic ice blue’

The holographic glint in this polish really stands out when the light hits it.  The effect is subtle, but definitely gorgeous!

Orion’s Belt from the Celestials

ORION’S BELT from The Celestials collection is a textured charcoal polish that looks deceptively like a glitter polish in the bottle (if you don’t read the description on the Sephora website anyway!).  I like that it has a good amount of sparkle to it, although I feel the silver glitter is quite dulled once applied to the nail.  I like it with two coats on the nail, which gives more depth and sparkle.  The formula was easy to work with and apply to the nail, so if you like textured polishes, look into this beauty!

Orion’s Belt is described as ‘charcoal and silver glitter shift’

Orion’s Belt close up – you can see the texture in this polish.

Indelible from The New Classics

INDELIBLE from The New Classics is a violet-blue cream shade that is slightly darker on the nail than it appears in the bottle.  I had the most issues with this polish.  The formula is on the thin side and I had a hard time loading the brush properly and keeping it from running away from me.  I also felt it set up rather quickly.  I re-did the swatches on this one because in my original photoshoot I only did one coat on the nail, which I thought had covered well, however, under the lights I could definitely see it needed second coat.  When re-swatching with a second coat I felt it was hard to spread and the second coat went on rather unevenly.  The color is pretty though, so if you have patience you might want to see if this one will work better for you.

Indelible is a cream ‘rich violet’ shade.

Indelible leans a little more blue-violet.

Perfection from The New Neutrals

PERFECTION, from The New Neutrals is a beautiful grey/faded plum shade that is a beautiful fall and winter neutral.  Although it is cool-toned, there is something cozy-sweater-weather about it to me.  The formula of Perfection was very nice – not too thick or too thin and easy to work with.  I do feel this shade needs two coats to fully cover the nail.  While this shade looks nearly brown on the Sephora website, and in the bottle it was deceptively more brown as well, I was very pleased to see the cool grey violet shade on the nails!

Perfection is described as a ‘smoky violet’

Perfection is a beautiful foggy gray/plum!

Overall I am loving the new Formula X for Sephora nail lacquers - the variety in finishes, and an almost unending selection is perfection!  Although I found the quality to vary depending on which polish I worked with, the overall quality of these polishes is excellent.  The cream finishes are ultra-shiny so no top coat is needed (but may be desired for longevity, and they are easy to work with.  Another noticeable bonus with these polishes is that they dry to the touch very quickly without having to use a dry fast top coat, so it is easier to function after applying the polish.  The polish doesn't fully cure for about 30 minutes for me though, so slight impressions can be left if I'm not careful, but I thought it was very impressive that I did not ruin my manicure once when heading out the door quickly after application (which is unheard of for me!).

As far as the longevity of the polishes, I am always hesitant to rate a polish based on how long it lasts on my nails because it can vary greatly from person to person, based upon the individual's nail condition, nail health, activity level, etc. but I will say these polishes feel high quality.  They wore similarly to essie, and Butter London polishes on my nails, and in one case the formula reminded me much of Butter London's cream formula as well (Perfection).

I would definitely recommend looking into the new Formula X lacquers if you spot a few you like.  I think you will be impressed as well!

There are so many to choose from that I think I need to try some more! I am definitely in love with the holograms. Because of my experience with this one (and it truly being a hologram unlike so many other brands who make that claim to their polish) makes me want to try more from that collection! I also have my eye on some of the natural creamy shades as well. I think you will definitely love them! :)
