Stylo Eyeshadow Fresh Effect Eyeshadow Pens

An exclusive creation from the L’ Été Papillon de Chanel Collection for Summer 2013, these limited edition Stylo Eyeshadow pens give a light wash of color for the lid with a beautiful shimmer that can build up in intensity.  The entire collection consists of six gorgeous shades, making it hard to choose which ones to purchase.  I have two to share with you today: Moon River and Jade Shore.

 Formula

Chanel’s Stylo Eyeshadows are an exclusive creation for the Summer 2013 collection.  I was most intrigued by their cooling, water-infused formula.  The cooling effect is very noticeable to me, and I must say it is quite a strange feeling for my eyelids (and under the lid area) to feel cooled, almost like they were wet.  This feeling lasts on my lids for approximately thirty minutes after application.  The shades are both highly shimmery giving the lids a metallic finish when built up, but they are smooth and hydrating, so I did not experience any eye irritation from the shimmer.  This product has no scent.

Pigmentation

The eyeshadows are a little less pigmented yet once swatched and on the eyes than what I was expecting from the tube.  Both can be worn in a single layer on the lids which gives a soft wash of color with shimmer or built up to intensify the metallic finish. Moon River is a light bronzed taupe with shimmer and Jade Shore is a very light earthy green shade with shimmer.

Longevity

I found that after 8 hours of wearing with no primer, I experienced noticeable creasing and slight fading on my lids.  When wearing a primer I did not experience this, so I would recommend using a primer if you have oily lids as I do.

Application

I found the Stylo Eyeshadows very easy to blend and work with.  In applying one layer and blending it out, it gives the eye a light wash of color with soft shimmer.  To build up the color I allowed the first layer to dry and built upon that, which gives the lids more of a solid metallic shimmer. They glide onto the lids easily with no pulling or tugging when applying directly from the tube, or even while blending with the finger.  They feel very lightweight, and almost slippery when blending.  The water-based formula is definitely different than what I have experienced before, but it is smooth and feels hydrating.  Although Chanel states these can be used precisely to define the eye as well, I find the tip to be too blunt, and the product to be a little too slippery to do so.  My attempts were successful in lining my under eye area with some precision, but the upper lashline was not defined.  I did not attempt to line my lower rims with this product, because I found the cooling sensation slightly intense when even placing it near my lashline areas and I did not want to experience that feeling in my eye.

Summary

Overall, Chanel has created a unique product in the Stylo Eyeshadows, with the water-based and cooling effect formula being the most intriguing. Those with with very sensitive eye areas may not find this cool feeling very pleasant.  I find the sensation quite odd myself, and definitely something I still need to get used to.  Both Moon River and Jade Shore are lovely colors that are great every day shades, and the other shades in the collection are also quite beautiful.  I kept wanting to compare these to other eyeshadow sticks and/or pots from various brands when reviewing them, and each time I tried to compare them, I just kept thinking to myself that these are just different.  They blend differently, have a lighter pigmentation and the formula is also different.  If you want to splurge on a limited edition exclusive, you might want to take a look in case you find you love this interesting formula!

Pygmalion Rouge Coco Shine, Limited Edition Summer 2013

Chanel packaging is so beautiful!

Although Pygmalion looks bright in the tube, because of the light formula it is very wearable.

In Greek Mythology, Pygmalion refers to a king of Cyprus who carved an ivory statue of a maiden and fell in love with it.  Aphrodite brought the statue to life in response to his prayers. 

Formula

The Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Lip Colour Lipshines are sheer, shiny, yet color-rich and very easy to wear.  Pygmalion is very smooth and hydrating with lots of shine.  Chanel says it’s Hydratendre Complex softens and plumps the lips.  I find it to be very smoothing and it does leave them feeling soft.

Pigmentation

Pygmalion was more pigmented than I imagined it would be, giving the lips a vibrant watermelon-kissed shine, that while it isn’t opaque, is an easy wear color that takes you outside of the neutral box.

Longevity

Because it is a sheer and lightweight lipstick it does not last long on the lips.  I was able to get 1 1/2 hours wear out of it before it begins to fade.  As it wears, the shine and color seem to wear down simultaneously, and it wears off evenly.

Application

Application of this lipshine is very smooth, and while it is easy to apply all over the lips, the edges of the lips can be a little more tricky because the formula of the lipshine is very soft and nearly seems to melt once touching the lips.

Summary

Pygmalion Rouge Coco Shine is a beautiful shade that gives the lips just the right kiss of color to make the lips look soft and supple and perfect way to accent neutral summertime makeup.  I am in love with the formula and the feeling on the lips.  If you are looking for a luxurious lightweight lipstick for this summer, definitely take a look at this limited edition shade.

Zephyr Glossimer from the Chanel Summer 2013 Collection

The L’Été Papillon de Chanel Summer 2013 Collection is a dazzling collection inspired by colorful butterflies, which is such a beautiful palette for summer!  Although it consists of beautiful brights there are still a couple toned-down and versatile products in the mix, and the limited edition Glossimer in Zéphyr is one of them.

Swatched: Zephyr appears a very light warm peach shade.

As my lips are quite pigmented, Zephyr gives them a peachy-pink shine.

Translated, Zéphyr in French refers to a balmy breeze or west wind, which defines this soft lip color beautifully and makes a perfect addition to a butterfly inspired collection.

Formula

The formula of Zephyr is very lightweight and not sticky.  Although it has sparkle to it, it is still smooth and not gritty.

Pigmentation

This is a pale gloss that may show up more peach on lips which are less pigmented than mine, but overall it has very light pigmentation.

Longevity

Zéphyr lasted on my lips for approximately 1 1/2 hours.  During this time the shine dies down a bit, and it wears down evenly.  I found this gloss to be moisturizing to my lips and made them feel softer while on my lips.

Application

The doe-foot applicator makes this gloss easy to apply.  Although it is quite sheer, it can be built up in intensity to an extent and still does not feel sticky.

Summary

Lightly pigmented, yet smooth and sparkling, this is one gloss that can top off any lipstick or give your natural lips a smooth shine.  I love the moisturizing properties, and find Zéphyr’s light peachy shade a perfect neutral lip gloss. New from Smashbox for Summer 2013: Limited Edition Heat Wave Lip Enhancing Gloss

Smashbox introduces a set of four limited edition glosses that turn up the heat for summer.  These four glosses are juicy, pigmented and are the perfect compliment worn alone or to top off a lipstick.

The packaging is beautiful, and the colors are juicy!

The glosses are on the thicker side, so this larger doe-foot applicator makes it easy to apply the gloss.

Copper Remix is a beautiful coppery brown shade and it is the only shade in this set with slight sparkle.

Electric Orange is a juicy tangerine orange shade that is bright all by itself.

Fuchsia Flash is a vibrant hot pink shade.  This shade is the most pigmented in the collection. 

VIP Pink is a fresh soft pink shade with lots of shine.

Formula

The formula of these glosses is on the heavier side for a gloss, although they are not sticky at all, they last on my lips longer than a typical gloss which I think is due to this thicker formula.  While wearing on the lips it does not feel overly heavy, just more substantial (like it isn’t going anywhere), which I really like in a gloss.  The scent of these glosses is a little odd – a mix between waxy and sweet.  The closest thing I can think of to compare it to would be the scent of the Wax Bottles candy we ate as kids (remember those?!).  The scent does not linger too long, so I do not find them bothersome.  These glosses have a high shine finish.

Pigmentation

Most of the shades are very vibrant, with VIP Pink being the least pigmented and Fuchsia Flash being the brightest.  They do build up quite nicely and look beautiful on the lip alone.  I was quite unsure how brown Copper Remix would turn out (as I have tried to avoid brown lipsticks since the early 90s – yikes!).  I am pleased to say this one does pull a warm copper brown shade that I think could be very flattering natural lip on darker skintones, as well as summer bronzed up skin as well. This is the only shade with slight shimmer in it, but it is very subtle and not gritty.  Electric Orange is very vibrant and while not opaque, it leaves the lips with a very juicy orange shade that does pop.  Fuchsia Flash is very pigmented, and is a beautiful pop of hot pink that can definitely hold its own on the lip.  VIP Pink appears a little less pigmented (on my lips anyway) than in the bottle, but it really brightens up a natural look with a very complimentary shade of pink.

Longevity

As I mentioned above, the thicker formula does feel like it gives this gloss more staying power.  I was able to wear this for over 2 1/2 hours, eating and drinking, and the shine had only slightly faded.  I was rather impressed.  The longer I wore the gloss the more hydrated and soft my lips felt, which also surprised me, as I usually do not expect that from a gloss.  The gloss fades evenly as it wears.

Application

The tip of the doe-foot applicator is large compared to traditional applicators.  It was surprisingly easy to work with despite how large it is, and I was able to easily apply the product to my lips.

Summary

Overall I find these glosses to be perfect for the summer-sun gloss lover.  They are bright, last long on the lips and feel hydrating, leaving my lips soft.  I also love the intense juicy sheen!

YSL Rouge Volupté Shine vs Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter

Everyone loves a dupe, right?  Whether you want to save a little dough, or you like to have backups on hand similar to some of your favorite products, dupes are pretty much for everyone!  I want to share with you a high end vs. budget-friendly product that I found are quite similar.  If you are not familiar with the term “dupe” it refers to a product that is a “duplicate” or very similar to another product.  Today we’ll be looking at the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters which are a very popular budget-friendly lip product, and the luxurious YSL Rouge Volupté Shine.

Packaging: The packaging is slightly different, with the YSL being iconic-ally gold, very substantial, and all metal, while the Revlon Lip Butter has silver accents and has a plastic top.

They look different in the tube, with the Revlon shade being brighter.

Swatched (two swipes of each): Revlon Lip Butter in Sorbet on the Left, YSL #6 Pink in Devotion on the Right.

Revlon Lip Butter swatches slightly more pigmented.  One more swipe of  the YSL and it looks identical.

On the lips the difference is minimal.  Revlon Lip Butter in Sorbet on the left half of both the top and bottom lip, YSL Pink in Devotion on both the right half of the top and bottom lip.  Revlon has slightly more pigment (with two swipes) and YSL has a little more gloss.  The YSL can be built up for more pigmentation, but it also builds up the glossy finish when doing so as well.

Despite the height and size difference of the packaging, the amount in the packaging is nearly identical.

Similarities

• Color – the color is very similar between the two once swatched, and when worn on the lips. 
• Finish - both are very similar and have a glossy finish.
• • Formula - The YSL product is enhanced with fruit extracts, vitamins and antioxidants and claims to give up to eight hours of hydration. The Revlon Lip Butter also has hydrating fruit extracts (mango) and shea and coconut butter, which also claims to boost lip moisture by 156%.
• Longevity – both products last the same amount of time on my lips – approximately 3 hours (no eating or drinking).  The shine of the Revlon product does die down more quickly, but the color that is left on the lips wears down identically on me.  For being a lightweight lipstick both products surprisingly leave a very faint stain on the lips as they wear down.
• Texture/Feel - both of these products are lightweight lipsticks that have a near balm-like feeling on the lips. They are smooth and my lips feel equally as hydrated using both of them.

Differences

• Price – the price point between the two items is very different.  Around $6.50-$8 for the Revlon Lip Butter, while the YSL rings up at $34 (USD).
• Packaging – YSL is definitely extravagant with their packaging – which I love!  The lipstick is heavy and feels very luxurious.  Revlon has simple chic packaging style that still has glam to it.  I love the quilted pattern and the frosted tops of these lipsticks.
• Scent – the YSL product has a very fragrant fruity scent while the Revlon product has a very faint sweet scent.
• Texture/Feel - While the feeling of both of these products are soft and moisturizing to me, the YSL has more “slip” to it and feels slightly lighter when worn on the lips.

Summary

I think Sorbet and #6 Pink In Devotion are very close in not only color but also the finish and feeling on the lips, so I definitely call this a dupe!  I do want to point out that I do not think all of the Revlon Lip Butters compare to YSL Rouge Volupté Shine, however.  At least with the Revlon Lip Butters I have noticed more of an inconsistency in the formula between the shades (some are slightly gritty, some are soft, some are firm, etc.).  Overall they do give a very similar look on the lips though – a lightweight lipstick with a lot of shine.  Don’t get me wrong, I am in love with my Rouge Volupte Shine and I would love to add to my collection, but I am equally as happy this one has such a great color dupe as well!

I would love to know if you have experienced another Revlon Lip Butter shade that compares to a YSL Rouge Volupté Shine.

I have had my eye on a few products lately that I wanted to share with you.

1. Dior Nail Glow 0.33 oz $24 (USD). I’ve heard a few people talk about this product and it has got me curious.  It is a nail enhancer that is supposed to give your natural nails a shiny healthy glow.  Lately I’ve been loving just wearing my bare nails in between swatching sessions, and I think this might just be what I’m looking for to give my nails a bit of a glow but still look natural!
2. Living Proof Restore Discovery Kit $29 (USD).  After trying out two sample packets of the shampoo and conditioner in this line (which lasted me through four washings) I am in love with the scent and the way it makes my hair feel!  This one is near top-priority on my wish list as I am nearing the end of my current shampoo and conditioner bottles.  I suppose it doesn’t hurt that Jennifer Aniston is the spokesperson for the brand and her hair is fabulous!
3. Smashbox Camera Ready CC Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 30 Dark Spot Correcting Light/Medium 1 oz $42 (USD) I love trying out new BB and CC creams to see what they can do!  The newest one by Smashbox has got me intrigued by its lightweight formula and its claim to control oils.  Plus I love that it contains SPF 30 which is perfect for summer!

Happy Mother’s Day to my Mom (pictured above) with me when I was a few months old, circa 1977.  This is my favorite photo of us together – me all buggy-eyed and her with a chic bandana.  Love you Mom!

I want to take this moment to wish every woman who cares for a child a Happy Mother’s Day today!  You are amazing, and your words of encouragement and love echo throughout your child’s life and beyond to their children and grandchildren.  The sacrifices you make and the love you give today shape your child into who they are tomorrow.  Of course you are loved and thought of more than just one day a year, but this day you get extra love, so be sure to soak it all in!

I began beauty blogging originally to find who I was as a woman after putting myself aside while caring for my sweet baby boys.  In 2010 I discovered the beauty community and was amazed at a whole new way to feel like a woman learning things about makeup and hair I had never known before.  In 2011 I started my own blog, to document my new beauty journey, play with makeup looks and share product reviews.  From that point on  I grew to love the beauty community and enjoyed encouraging other women and mothers that it is okay to take care of yourself while being a mom – you do not have to put yourself aside!  I have found an amazing balance and happiness in life by learning to love not only my husband and my boys, but myself.  I hope to be an encouragement to other women to learn it is okay to take time for themselves, love themselves, and still be an amazing mother!

So Moms, what are your plans for today?  I’ve already gotten a few Mothers Day gifts from my boys before the actual day (too hard to keep it secret!).  My seven year old has been making me more gifts over the past few days– of course they are top-secret and so I have to be careful when entering a room or I might see a project in the making so it’s been rather tense around here!  He also surprised me while I was gone Saturday doing a little shopping by cleaning the entire house while I was away- even making his bed and organizing his closet – wow!  I was so impressed with him, but even cuter is how impressed he was with himself.  I think he praised himself as much as I did, lol!  Today I plan on going out to get some Cinnabons with my boys for breakfast because I have been craving those for a long time *mouth waters*, then maybe run some fun errands and relax.  What fun things do you have planned?  I’d love to hear!
