Well of course it’s almost fall, but that doesn’t mean I’m slowing down in the SPF department!  In fact, now in Texas we’re heading into the tolerable season of summer  where it is “cool enough” (a.k.a. in the 90s) to actually function outside without fear of a heatstroke!  Earlier this summer I tried out two sunscreen products by COOLA Suncare, a 70% organic and 100% cruelty free brand.  Here are my thoughts on two of the brand’s innovative products that are definitely changing my SPF game!

COOLA SPF30 Natural BB Cream

COOLA SPF30 Natural BB Cream, $36 US, sephora.com – This mineral-based SPF (Titanium Dioxide 3.2%, Zinc Oxide 1.8%) has a broad spectrum rating of SPF 30.  COOLA also carries a cucumber scented version, but this one is unscented which I appreciate since I am sensitive to fragrance.  The finish is matte, which makes it perfect for those who have oily to combination skin, yet it does not feel drying on the skin, so this could most likely be used for any skin type.

Although the product is marketed as a “BB Cream”, the texture is unlike any BB cream I have tried so I would compare it more to a mattifying primer – light, with a slightly fluffy texture and it leaves the skin feeling ultra smooth which makes it perfect to wear under makeup.  The product states it is tinted, but the tint does not give my skin any sort of tint or coverage.  Although it works well under makeup most of the time I’ve been reaching for it when I’m heading out for a run or running errands without makeup on, so I can be sure to get SPF coverage when I’m out and about.  It leaves my skin with a very nice finish, is not greasy and does not drip into my eyes when working out.  This SPF has been my favorite this summer!

Aluminum Hydroxide, Butyrospermum Parkii (Organic Shea Butter), Cucumis Sativus (Organic Cucumber) Fruit Extract, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Glycerin (Organic), Hydrogen Dimethicone, Iron Oxides, Isopropyl Myristate, Isopropyl Titianium Triisostearate, Linum Usitatissimum (Organic Linseed) Seed Oil, Mica, Oenothera Biennis (Organic Evening Primrose) Oil, Plankton Extract, Polyamide-5, Polysilicone-11, Propylene Carbonate, Rosa Canina (Organic) Fruit Oil, Silica Silylate, Stearalkonium Hectorite, Synthetic Wax.

COOLA Makeup Setting Spray SPF30

COOLA Makeup Setting Spray SPF30, $36 US, sephora.com – There are countless times I’ve been at long outdoor events where I would love to reapply SPF throughout the day but I don’t want to mess up my makeup and/or spray a greasy SPF on my face.  This stellar product combines a makeup setting spray and SPF protection all in one which is absolutely genius!  Although I have oily skin I felt like it worked well and did not exacerbate my shininess, and while I did not feel like it gave a lasting matte finish throughout the day

it does work as well as other makeup setting sprays I have tried to give the skin a more finished look.  The aloe vera and cucumber formula are meant to soothe and refresh the skin, but I don’t really smell them as I use the setting spray.  The formula also contains  hyaluronic acid to soften and re-hydrate the skin throughout the day, which is a definite bonus.  The chemical SPF ingredients (Avobenozone 2.1%, Homosalate 3.5%, Octinoxate 3.5%, Octisalate 2.8%)  definitely contribute to the scent of the product as I use it, and that scent lasts for awhile afterwards as well.

Shaking the spray well is crucial before each application, and I found the mist that it sprays out isn’t as fine as I’ve experienced with other sprays, so it leaves several larger spots on the skin left to absorb a few seconds longer.  The finish on the skin is immediately matte.  The feeling it leaves on the skin is similar to a spray SPF, where it feels like a slight film, but it is not greasy or slick.

Overall I think this a great option for anyone who needs to reapply SPF on top of makeup throughout the day without disturbing what’s underneath.  I do not see myself using this outside of those times where I know I will be in the sun, simply because of the feeling on my skin afterwards, but the entire concept is genius and worth getting for all of those summer activities like the beach, waterparks, summer sports, etc. when you need that SPF protection but you don’t want to mess up your makeup to reapply!
